Machtiz Hashekel Portrait

Hi boys and girls! In Parshas Shekalim, we learn that the Yidden were counted by each bringing a Machatzis Hashekel – a half Shekel coin.

Did you know?

Just like two halves make up a whole, so too each of us is like a half that needs another to complete us. We are one half and we need every person – each of whom is like that second half – to become truly whole.

Supplies

  • Print out of the portrait
  • 3 types of silver cardstock (Glittery, Mirror-like, Shimmery)
  • Black cardstock
  • Clear plastic sheet
  • Circle hole puncher OR scissors and a half-dollar coin
  • black and silver permanent markers
  • glue stick
  • clear tape

Instructions

  1. Take silver glitter, mirror and shimmery cardstock papers. By using a circle hole puncher cut out circles from half of each sheet. If using scissors, put a coin on the paper and trace around with a pencil, then cut out.
  2. Take a glue stick and glue the bottom of the black cardstock. Place circles in order as shown; in a pyramid style. Keep on adding the glue and placing more circles till you fill up the whole sheet
  3. Now take the clear sheet and place the print out of the face under. With a black marker trace and color everything that’s black, With a silver everything that’s white
  4. Place clear sheet on top of the circles and secure with tape.
  5. Your craft is ready!

Imagine…

You’re waiting to see a friend from far away. You haven’t seen him in a long time and he is coming to visit. You make sure your home is tidy and you are stocked with some special treats for the visit. When he finally comes you want to spend as much time with him as possible until he leaves.

This is like Purim Katan, the special Yom Tov that only comes around once in a while and when it’s here, we try to make the most of it.

Delving Deeper

When a Yom Tov comes around, it is certainly exciting, but there’s a lesson we can learn from Purim Katan to remember every day! We can learn to think of every day as a special once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because that’s what it is! Every day is a new piece of life! When we remember this, we come to cherish every moment of our days, from waking up in the morning to eating breakfast, going to school, and everything in between.

What is one way to cherish every day? By thanking the One Who woke you up in the morning. No, not your mother – Hashem! Hashem gave you another day of life, along with eyes that can see, ears that can hear, and every other blessing that you have. By thanking Hashem, you are making this day extra special, just like Purim Katan is an extra special day on the calendar.

Point to ponder

How can you make today an extra special day?
